Town of Lexington, SC – Today, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson announced his endorsement of Gavin J. Smith for re-election to Lexington Town Council.

Congressman Wilson, who serves South Carolina’s Second Congressional District, cited Gavin’s integrity, transparency, and commitment to important issues as his reason for supporting Smith for re-election:

“Gavin Smith is honest, hardworking, and dedicated to the people of Lexington. He’s leading on the issues that matter most—improving our roads, supporting small businesses, backing law enforcement, and protecting our quality of life. Gavin serves with integrity and transparency, and he’s earned the trust of this community. That’s why it’s important we re-elect him to Town Council, and it’s why Gavin has my full support on November 4th!”

Congressman Wilson’s endorsement comes shortly after Smith announced his Campaign Steering Committee — comprised of twelve local leaders, including small business owners, community leaders, and young people — who continue to advise Smith on priorities, citizen outreach, and keeping residents engaged before and after the election. Smith has also earned the support and endorsement of Beth Carrigg, Immediate Past Chair of Lexington County Council, Darrell Hudson, Immediate Past Vice Chair of Lexington County Council, Todd Cockrell, Lexington County Councilmember, and McKenzie Flashnick, Lexington County School District One Board Member.

Smith was elected in May 2023 to fill a vacancy on Town Council triggered by the resignation of former Town Councilmember Steve Baker. He was elected to finish out the remaining two-and-a-half years of Baker’s four-year term, making history by becoming the youngest member ever to serve on Lexington Town Council.

Since joining Council, Smith has worked to strengthen transparency and communication by launching Talk of the Town, a monthly newsletter that remains the only publication of its kind by a Councilmember. He has actively connected with citizens through social media updates, neighborhood meetings, and direct outreach, ensuring residents have a voice in their government. Smith has also taken a strong stand for responsible development, fought to keep traffic congestion solutions at the forefront of the Council’s agenda, and spearheaded a first-of-its-kind working group between the Town, County, and School District to foster stronger collaboration across all three.

“I am humbled to have the support of Congressman Wilson, whose long record of service has benefited Lexington and the entire Midlands,” Smith said. “His confidence in my work means a great deal as I remain focused on serving our residents with transparency, accountability, and a results-driven approach.”

Smith is seeking re-election to his first full, four-year term on Lexington Town Council in the November 4, 2025 General Election.
